Alabama Birth Certificate Apostille

If you need an Alabama-issued Birth certificate recognized in another country, an apostille is required. This service ensures your document meets all state and international authentication requirements for use in a Hague Convention country.

Why This Document Requires an Apostille

Foreign authorities often require an apostille to confirm the authenticity of a birth certificate issued in the United States.

Apostille Process

  • Request an Apostille copy from the Alabama Center for Health Statistic
  • Submission to the Alabama Secretary of State
  • Apostille issued for international use

Certified copies

Certified copies of vital records can only be issued by the vital records office in the state or county where the event occurred. Only these government agencies can issue certified copies.

For Alabama vital records that need an apostille:

You must order a special apostille copy directly from the Alabama Center for Health Statistics (part of the Alabama Department of Public Health).

How to order Alabama apostille copies:

  • By mail: Send application to Alabama Center for Health Statistics, P.O. Box 5625, Montgomery, AL 36103-5625
  • By phone: Call (334) 206-5418
  • In person: Visit the office in Montgomery

Important: These apostille-ready copies cannot be requested online or at Alabama county health departments. They must be ordered through the state vital records office.

Fee: $25.00 per apostille copy (this includes the certified copy formatted for apostille)

Why the special copy?

Apostille copies of Alabama birth and death certificates must bear the signature of the current Alabama State Registrar. Regular certified copies from county health departments do not have this signature and cannot be apostilled.

Turnaround Time

Processing time varies based on state processing volume. Expedited facilitation options may be available.

Important Notes

  • Documents must be properly certified before submission
  • Apostilles are only valid for use in Hague Convention member countries
  • Non-Hague countries require a different authentication process
